Checklist for Teacher Candidates
Preparing for Semester 1 (newly admitted candidates)
- OSAS Advising - Set up an advising appointment with the Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS) in Everly Hall 126, if you have not already done so. In addition to your core courses, there are other COE course requirements that you must meet in order to graduate in a timely manner. Develop a comprehensive plan with your advisor so you know what courses to take each semester (including summers if applicable).
- New Student Orientation – Attend the New Student Orientation (date and time announced in your acceptance packet welcome letter). Orientation is held in August and January. Program handbook is reviewed in ITE 401.
- Laptop Computer – The College of Education has implemented a laptop initiative for all students. You must acquire a laptop as it is a program requirement.
- Register for ITE 401 – Introduction to Teaching course must be taken during the summer or during your first semester in the College of Education.
Preparing for ITE 402 (Observation and Participation, Field Experience)
- ITE 402 Placement Survey – Complete and submit the ITE 402 Placement Information Form to the ITE Secondary Program Office by the end of the spring semester prior to registering for the fall semester methods course (ITE 404). The form can be found in the attachments below, in Appendix N of the handbook.
- Name Badge – After you have submitted your ITE 402 placement form and registered for ITE 402 and ITE 404, acquire an ITE name badge through the UHM Campus Center Ticket, Information and ID Office (CC 212). Name badges identify students as ITE teacher candidates in public schools during school visits and field experiences. The cost of $5 is due at the time of order. Identify yourself as a COE student. The Campus Center employee will check to verify that your name is on their list.
- Liability Insurance – Acquire and maintain liability insurance through the College of Education Student Association (CESA) in OSAS. You can purchase a student membership online at https://sites.nea.org/JoinNea/. The Liability Insurance Policy can be found in the attachments below.
- Fingerprinting and Background Check – 30-60 days prior to your first field experience placement, complete a background check and fingerprinting (the DOE Fingerprinting Policy and Personnel Form 90 can be found in the attachments below), required by the Hawaii Board of Education. The DOE sends a list of approved background checks to the ITE Partnership and Placement Coordinator.

- Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting (video) http://downloads.k12.hi.us/training/childabusereporting/

Preparing for ITE 405/406 (Student Teaching)
• Student Teaching Application and Graduation Check – Complete a formal application for student teaching and make an appointment with an advisor in OSAS to complete a graduation check and application for graduation. Forms and deadline information are included in Appendix L.
ITE 405/406 (Student Teaching)
• Large Group Seminars – The Secondary Program organizes large group seminars each semester especially for student teachers. The seminars focus on a range of current topics related to schools and students.
• OSAS Placement File – Make an appointment with your OSAS advisor to open your Student Placement File to use with future employers.
Please note that the Secondary Student Handbook is located at the bottom of this page. We will be updating the handbook over break. Important announcements and information will be posted here as well.
Important Reminders for Student Teachers:
- Contact the mentor teacher before the current semester ends to discuss the curriculum and when you begin your student teaching.
- Student Teaching follows the UH semester calendar.
- The Student Teacher keep the same hours as regular teachers and teach ½ of the teacher’s load.
- Teaching responsibilities vary from total responsibility on day 1 to gradual induction.
- (On the Job Training) or OJT's must have a contract and teaching load of at least 3 periods in the content seeking licensure.
- Attendance – if you are sick, you must call your mentor and UC.
- If your mentor teacher is out and you are a certified substitute, you may substitute for the teacher. See the handbook below for policy.
- Student teaching requires your full attention and you are encouraged to cut down on your outside employment to give full attention to student teaching.
- You will also be involved in an action research project called the Teacher Work Sample which will require a lot of cognitive attention and a lot of writing.
- You must have a lesson plan for each day – no lesson plan, no teaching.
- ITE 405 and ITE 406 are co-requisites. You must pass both successfully. See handbook for policy. If a student gets a NO CREDIT for ITE 405 or a failing grade in ITE 406, the student fails both student teaching and seminar.
- Student teachers must have current liability insurance.
- A Plan of Assistance may be developed to ensure student teacher success. A Plan of Assistance identifies teaching stengths/deficiencies and sets a clear timeline for improvement. See handbook for policy.
- The reasons for withdrawal from student teaching are listed below. Please see handbook for policy.
1) Personal deficiency;
2) Does not have the essential skills for teaching;
3) Can be withdrawn at any time.
Remember to act and dress professionally at all times. You are a representative of the university and, more importantly, you are assuming the role of a classroom teacher.
Please also review the teaching standards linked below. Secondary Program Standards and Program Matrix are located in the Secondary Program Handbook.
